How to find the best fit for you:

Taking steps to improve yourself, family, or kids is a big decision. You have the right to find the very best therapist for your family. Here are some questions that every therapist or psychologist should be able to answer. We want you to feel comfortable, ask us as many questions as you would like, this is a big decision:

Q: What type of counseling license do you have?

Dr. Kugel is a licensed clinical psychologist.

Licensed Clinical Psychologist is a doctoral level clinician who is specialized in the diagnosis, treatment, and assessment of mental health disorders. Dr. Kugel is licensed by the California Board of Psychology which has some of the strictest standards in the U.S.

Q: What are the counseling sessions like?

First, we will meet for a consultation in which we will learn what is going on in your life and what it is that you are seeking. We will also focus on making you feel better right here, right now. That will mean focusing on your current life stressors and making your situation more manageable and fulfilling. We work collaboratively with our clients and together we will develop a relationship that will focus on what you truly want to achieve.

In later sessions you will find a safe space for you to talk about you life and issues that need to be addressed. Don’t worry we will guide you through this process. You will also learn skills that you can use to cope in hard moment and you’ll also learn facts about the various issues that you might be facing.

We strongly emphasize the therapeutic relationship with you, your family, or your children. It is important to understand that the relationship itself is therapeutic and for this reason we bring a great deal of warmth, acceptance, and openness to our relationship with our clients. This will help us effectively achieve your goals and address your needs.

Q: What therapy theoretical approach do you take?

We take an integrative approach which assimilate elements of various treatment modalities. Dr. Kugel’s earlier training was in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which focuses on the link between thoughts, feelings, and behavior. It allows the clinician to better understand how these interact and affect each other and then in turn enable the client to improve their lives by affecting these elements.

Later on, Dr. Kugel also received training and experience in additional treatment modalities such as mindfulness-based therapies, family systems, psychodynamic approaches, hypnosis, emotional-intelligence, and more. As each client comes with different goals, strengths, and preferences, we adapt the approach for a best fit. For example, with children who suffer from ADHD, we emphasize mindfulness practices and emotional intelligence to facilitate neuroplastic brain changes, which increase their ability to concentrate and be more focused. With families, we will focus on family system approaches and parental guidance and training to make the family more integrated, peaceful, and joyful. With adults and adolescents suffering from pain, health problems, or substance abuse we also add subliminal therapy or hypnosis to target conditioned behaviors, using the body and mind to cope with difficult life situations.

However, we regards to theory: Dr. Kugel’s model ultimately see mental health problems as resulting from difficulty of integrating a stable identity structure.

Every person will sooner or later experience some depressive moments in life. This can last several hour or days. However, when someone integrate depressive thoughts, feelings, and behavior into their identity this can become a long-lasting and chronic condition. The same can happen with anxiety, low self-esteem, traumatic experience, and even seemingly “biological” conditions such as ADHD, Autism, or Mania. Dr. Kugel’s work, help clients to change identity, values, and develop confidence so that they are able to engage the world with courage, to have a fuller experience of life, and to self actualize.

Q: How many counseling sessions do most clients attend?

Every client has different needs. Some clients come in for a consultation and through simple problem-solving approach are on their way after one session alone. Some need three or four to explore a particular problems and change some of their beliefs or solve a current crisis in family. Many clients enjoy the process of working with Dr. Kugel and decide to work on deeper identity issues that provide them with a sense of stability, peace, and better engagement in life. This question could be addressed and answered better during your first session.

When should I seek therapy?

Seeking therapy is a personal choice, but generally people come to therapy if the suffering in your life is preventing you from living a generally happy and fulfilling life. This can be the result of an internal process, something that changed or is happening in your environment beyond your control, or a combination of those. Ask us. We’ll happy to give you an advice whether therapy is right for you or not. That does not cost money.

How much does it cost?

How often will see my therapist?

It depends on your needs and your therapist’s assessment and recommendations; but usually most client will begin with once a week and then gradually decrease their attendance to once every two weeks and then check in once a month.

What is mindfulness?
